Teeth and gums hurt... recommendations if I have to wait to see dentist?!

Question: I am having a good amount of pain in my upper molars on the right side of my face, and my gums are swollen... but I have to wait to see the dentist. What can I do to help the problem in the meantime.

It sounds like you have an absess. If you rub the swollen area and press on it a little, the absess should break. It will bleed a little, but the pressure will be released under the gums where the infection is. You can rinse your mouth with warm water or rinse and spit with some hydrogen peroxide to get your gums ready before you press on them. If the infection has damaged the roots of the teeth, you will need a lot of dental work, but often there is just an infection in the gum just below the gumline and against the tooth - it is like a pimple between the tooth and the gum. It will hurt to press on it, but if you have used the warm water and some hydrogen peroxide first, it should pop pretty readily. I used to get these alot in my younger days.

Oil of cloves - works everytime. Go to the pharmacy.

oral gel or some kind of tooth pain reliever that you can buy at a grug store over the counter.

sensodyne toothpaste might help if the discomfort is just due to gingivitis, but if you have an abcess, you had better not wait, that is a dental emergency because the infection in the oral abcess can easily travel to the brain.

Rinse your mouth out with warm salt water several times a day. That's what they always tell you to do after any kind of oral surgery to keep your mouth clean and to speed healing. It works too!

sounds like gingivitis. you should see the dentist for that...

A pharmacist told me that I could take tylenol with an aspirin product (aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen) at the same time. The reason is that the tylenol product goes through the liver and the aspirin product goes through the kidneys. The tylenol product works on pain registering in the brain and the aspirin product works on pain and inflammation at the site.

You could also try heating pads or ice packs, but that doesn't work after awhile.

Ibuprofen is great for this kind of pain. When I had my wisdom teeth out, the pain killer the dentist gave me did almost nothing, but 3 ibuprofen took care of the problem.

The salt water is good to reduce the inflammation. Orajel tastes pretty nasty and I don't like the way it feels, but if you're in a lot of pain, it might be worth a try.

painful and swollen gums are warning signs of gum disease, yes you need to get to the dentist right away. your dentist will check on your gum condition and recommend gum disease treatments. in the meantime, you might consider using an all natural oral care product to keep the gum disease from progression, this will help you clean the mouth and keep it salivated as well as keep bad bacteria in the mouth under control. continue having good oral hygiene, it can really help. visit http://www.themouthdoctor.com for more helpful tips on gum care.
