Pain Under Bridge Work?!

Question:

Pain Under Bridge Work?

For the last 3 days now, I have gum pain around a tooth that was covered by a bridge. The tooth was not canalled, but was prepared as an abutment for the bridge and capped. The pain is relieved by iburproprin (sp) but comes back. Is this a gum problem or a problem with the underlying tooth? Can a tooth be canalled through a bridge?
It was (the bridge) placed about 5 months ago with no problems till now. Please trouble shoot this for me as I fear running to dentist without giving this time. Thanks.

Lady X has given a great answer. Please call your dentist so that they can x-ray the tooth. They should be able to test the tooth and determine if it needs a root canal. It's not always a fun procedure, but if necessary it will save your bridge work. Also, be sure to clean your bridge well and floss under it each day. Your hygienist or dentist should be able to demonstrate this for you. It is important to keep the bridge clean to prevent decay on the surrounding teeth. Good luck!
