There is a black line in the middle of one of my molars, is this a cavity?!

Question:

It doesn't hurt or anything. I was just inspecting my teeth and saw a small dark line in the middle of the back molar. What should I do?

Answers:

If it's across the "top" of the tooth, I'd suspect it's a crack, and you should get it checked by you dentist ASAP. If the tooth is cracked, there's no saving it. But getting it treated early can mean the difference between a crown and a root canal (been there, done that).

In my case, there was no pain - just a slight sensitivity to hot liquids (temp change caused the crack to expand). You may notice a slight give when biting on something like a pencil -- but I wouldn't suggest testing it that way - that could be the bite that cracks the tooth right down to the root. (don't ask :( )
