Hard lump on jaw after wisdom teeth removal?!

Question: I recently posted another question here about excessive swelling after wisdom teeth removal. I had them removed four days ago. Now the swelling has gone down quite a bit, although I still look like I have a double chin.

My new concern is an extremely hard lump I found on the right side of my jaw. It feels like bone or extremely thick cartilage, and it also feels very bruised, although you can't see any discoloration. I can't feel it inside my mouth, only on the outside of my jaw. So it's not something I forgot to take out of my mouth.

What is this very hard bump? Is it normal?

This very hard bump is a blood clot. I know very well the "freak-out" that comes from finding this! I had the same thing after I had a molar pulled a few years ago. I called my dentist ASAP convinced that she had splintered my jawbone or something. She assured me that it was a very large blood clot between my jawbone and gums and that it would go away over the next few weeks. Fortunately, she was right. It is sore primarily because the jaw muscles are sore. This, too, shall pass, more quickly than the bump itself will. Care for your removal sites per your dentist's instructions and allow time to heal the trauma your mouth has endured. Best of luck to you and I hope this helped alleviate some of the panic. :)
