Getting a filling.?!
Question: I absolutely HATE the dentist. my anxiety towards the dentist is so bad that I have to take 2 valume before I even step foot in the door. I got my braces off december 17th and I took care of them so well that my dentist told me to stop brushing so much because I was actually doing damage, but now I have two TINY cavities where my molar bands were. I have never had a cavity before and I don't know what to expect. What exactly do they do when they fill them, he said it would just take about 30 mins top and that they were so small he might not have to numb me up at all, but I'm still scared.

I am a dental assistant ... and also have had many many fillings.
all they do is drill into the tooth to remove the decay and depending on what kind of filling they do here is the process...
for a dark filling ( amalgam) they will drill out the decay then rinse it . put a band around the tooth ( most times ) which is used to keep the filling in the tooth. Then he/she will have you bite on a blue piece of paper. this checks your bite. they will then remove the excess filling and shape it to your bite. and you are done.
if you are having a white filling ( composite) they will drill out the decay and put a blue fluid on called etch . they will wait a min. and then rinse it. after that he will put some material on that matches your tooth color. he will use a light to make it dry super fast . then he shaves down the excess material and uses the bite paper again to see where your teeth are hitting . then he will use a tip to polish your tooth to make it smooth.
Dont worry we do atleast 5 of these a day .. and they are sooo easy esp. if they are small. if you are scared of it hurting get the shot. if not then there is nothing else to be worried about.

i too am scared but after telling my new dentist of my fear hes been so good, infact i went for two deep fillings tody
they'll inject in your gums to numb you, a sharp prick, but lasts seconds and isnt as bad as you expect, jab your gum with your nail, and thats it
then they drill the naty bit out...it vibrate but doesnt hurt atall and wont last long, then they push a letal band ound the tooth, its uncomfortable, but again, no pian, then fills it, you'll feel pressure as they push the filling down t make sure its in all the gaps and then its done

First of all I think you could have it numbed .
What they do first is clean your teeth cavities with a drill thing.
Its slightly uncomfortable. Your cavities are small so you shouldn't feel any pain at all! Good news huh?
But you could feel a lot of sensitivity in your teeth.
Then they clean again, dry ure teeth and fill em, ask you to bite down to make it even.
Ask you not to chew on that side for the day.

fearing the dentist is ok, taking Valium, as ,long as the dentist knows , is ok. but brushing your teeth so much that you damage them means that fear has taken over your life. you are willing to hurt yourself to keep yourself from going to the dentist
as for what to expect, it is more uncomfortable then painful. i think you will be more scared of what he is doing, then of it hurting.
you need to tell the dentist how scared you are, before the appointment. they deal with this everyday. he will explain what he is going to do, if you really cant handle it, they can give you drugs, even an IV to put you out, like surgery. your dentist might not be able to give you the heavy drugs, but he can refer you to a dentist that can.
but you really should work on this fear with a shrink. he can also work with the dentist to give you drugs. you will still have the fear, but you wont care.
i have had root canals with just Novocain. they drilled from the top of the tooth to the bottom. when they showed me the xray after they were done, i could not believe they drilled that far and i never felt it.
i JUST got back from getting my first 2 cavities filled. i was really worried but it wasnt that bad! They started without novacaine and he told me to stop him if i felt any pain. I did start to feel a little bit of pain so he gave me novacaine (through the inside of my cheek with a needle---this did NOT hurt at all and thats the part that i was really worried about). After the novacaine i didnt feel anything and it turns out that one of my cavities was alot deeper than expected which was why i felt some pain. im still swollen and my mouth feels really weird. i wont be able to eat until the novacaine wears off. But really, since yours are small it wont be bad at all!! Good luck!
