Are palatal expanders really uncomfortable to wear? im getting one on today and im really scared.?

I had one when I was about 11. It was a plastic thing that fit on the roof of my mouth and it had a little key that you had to turn every night so that it would expand a little.
I don't remember it hurting much. I would do it at night before I went to bed and it would just feel tight. It is such a tiny amount that it's expanding each time, that you won't notice much. If anything it will just be a little sore when you chew, or it might ache a little.
The most annoying thing about it was that I'd get food and stuff stuck between it and the roof of my mouth, so I had to rinse my mouth out a lot after I ate, or brush my teeth if I was able to.
