Just got my braces today...my teeth feel..heavy and sore...relief????!

Question: I took 2 advil and slept for about 1/2 hour. My teeth feel very heavy and one tooth in particular feels very tender. My cheeks dont feel sore at all though. I was wondering what I can do to lessen the pain. I find that if I bite down on a rolled up piece of kleenex that helps....any other ideas?

sucking on candy helps get you used to them. i had them for 5 years in grade 5 and i hated it!! but i have an amazing smile now.

the pain is from your teeth moving and taking shape, they are being pushed by the braces to their correct position. this is as uncomfortable as it will get, it will get easier with each day since your teeth will start to move and position, causing less pain. the only other time you will feel this is when you go to get them tightened by your dentist, but still, it wont' be as painful as the first time and you will be so used to them by then.

yes, advil, tylenol helps alot and pressing down like you do also will help you, try massaging your temples, neck and jaw a little also. hang in there, its only going to get better from here..

ya, some pressure helps, but i would suggest more advil. i got mine off last june. son't worry, they get alot better! but they will probably hurt alot more tomorrow. eat REALLY REALLY soft stuff. i couldn't even eat a muffin, so drinks would probably better. good luck!

your teeth with probably be sore tomorrow as well...all you can really do it wait it out. eventually, youll be fine & there will be little to no pain. eat really soft foods, smoothies are the best. take your pain medications as directed. they should help you out the most. just relax & try not to think about it. just think, when its all over youll have a perfect smile!

/ Ambesol can help, but the real answer is 'time.'

I still remember the initial pain, but it becomes something you just 'feel' without the hurt. In fact, you think of it as good because you know your teeth are moving.

I am so glad I went through it.

Braces:

1. Braces hurt because they work by "breaking" the grip that your gums have on your tooth root. This grip must be broken in order for the braces to move the teeth into proper alignment. Biting down on that tissue moves the roots back into their original place, so they hurt less.

2. Your gums will tighten up again in 2-3 days and your discomfort will decrease. (At least until the next tightening.)

3. Taking your pain medication 1/2 hour before each tightening will help. Oraljel, or any topical anesthetic, doesn't typically help because the pain is in the root, not the gums.

4. The first few months of braces, there is a lot of movement, so there is more pain. After several months, your teeth will be more in proper alignment and won't have to be moved so far with each tightening.

5. Invest in a Waterpik. http://www.waterpik.com/oral-health-prod... They keep your mouth and braces clean and fresh.

6. Your brackets may start rubbing and making the inside of your cheeks sore. Your orthodonist can give you wax strips that you hold under hot water and then press against the brackets. Looks a little weird, but it stops the pain.

7. Proxabrushes (or any similar product) http://www.jbutler.com/products/consumer... can help clean around your braces.

8. Floss threaders http://www.drmehan.com/images/floss%20th... can help you floss around your braces.

Your orthodontist may be able to give you samples of proxabrushes, wax, and floss threaders.

if you just got them, it will probably hurt even more the next day, so don't start complaining just yet. pressure does help, i never used kleenex though it seems kind of gross... anyway, make sure you get as much liquid or semi solid food to eat as you can, because you won't be able to eat anything else for a while.
