I'm in school to be a dental assistant and here's my answer for you. The reason the retainer doesn't fit any more is the hot made the material it's made of flexible. As soon as it cooled off it set back up to what ever shape/size it was in. Before I went to the dentist/orthodontist, I would try to resize it to fit him again. I believe that this is worth a try in order to save yourself money. Drop is back in warm water and have him place it in his mouth, work it so that it fits and leave it there until it cools off/hardens. Just make sure that it's not too hot before putting it in his mouth....don't want to burn him...that's be bad. Hope this helps.
