I'm scared of the dentist?!

Question: I've got an appointment to see the dentist this Saturday and I'm totally freaking out. I haven't gone for years and don't know what to expect. Help?! Any advice? I need at least a few cavities filled.

They are going to use the scavenger to pick at your teeth and remove plaque that you didn't remove while brushing your teeth. It's that pointed hook thing that scrapes along your teeth's crevices. It doesn't really hurt. It just feels like someone taking a toothpick and picking between your teeth....

If they do have to drill cavities, then they will numb your mouth using a swab of novacaine on your gums, then stick a needle into your gums and inject more novacaine into your mouth, so basically you won't feel a thing! :)

Just sit back and relax....let the novacaine work it's magic in your mouth and close your eyes. Some dentists office play music overhead to help patients relax....

Don't worry, be happy!

there is nothing to be scared of....when you go in just tell them you are chicken and they will take special care with you....and be extra gentle .....if the dentist you are seeing uses nitrous oxide( laughiing gas) ask if you can have some..it will take the egde off and make you relax ...there are so many new advances in managing pain it's is truelly a new experience

Call your dentist and explain your fear. See what options they have available. Nitrous oxide really relaxes people in the dental chair (laughing gas). Or maybe they can prescribe something like xanax or valium. We used to have some patients come in a half hour early for their appointment and we'd dispense a relaxant for them. Dentists work with fears all the time. They're trained to help you. Just call them and explain your situation.

You'll be numbed up for your fillings.....and even though the thought of a shot might freak you out, they do put a numbing agent on the gum (called a topical anesthetic) before they give you the shot. So don't worry about that either.

Call your dentist and let them know.....they will want to help you in any way possible. Don't be shy about it......LOTS of people are phobic when it comes to dentists. :)

find out if they offer laughing gas or nitrous oxide, it's the same thing. my husband had a lot of cavities because of fear going to the dentist. They used that and he loved it.

i hadnt gone in a long time and i knew it was going to be bad sure enough i needed 3 root canals omg i panicked and worried for a week well when i got there they asked me if i wanted to use the gas i didnt hesitate to say yep any way it was nothing i mean really i was stunned i guess as long as you use the gas so what who cares yahoo

Ahhhhhhh, don't worry about it. BUT, I know how you feel. I don't like when I have to go, BUT I'm not so much afraid of the pain, I just don't like not being able to spit!

I'm scared of Chuck Norris :D

I'd SUGGEST you give up your FEAR and realize that you will have MORE to fear if you do NOT start going to the dentist EVERY SIX MONTHS like CLOCKWORK.... Your MOUTH is the doorway to the inside of your body---you get a mouth infection because you don't go to a dentist and you risk getting very sick, loosing the teeth, getting seriously ba gums and of COURSE cavities.... people who don't go to the dentist often have more to be nervous about then those who see their dentists at LEAST once every 6 months.... Dentists try to be as painless as possible... a little needle is NO BIG DEAL for novocaine...... but trust me, if you don't start TAKING REALLY GOOD CARE of those teeth, you honestly DO run the risk of getting some pretty nasty infections IN and throughout your entire body--NOT JUST YOUR MOUTH....so suck it up and get over your fear---it is NOT the worse thing that will ever happen to you---(going to the dentist) but it could be a LOT better with regular check ups and GOOD oral hygiene!!!!!

if you scared its gonna hurt ask for something to calm you down

well... just keep thinking about how your look and how your feel once your teeth start falling out of your head.!! that's scarier then going to the dentist!

plus your only be there like a max of 2 hours, just for one day, then its over. and your cavities will be filled!!!!! YAY!!

i predict when you walk out your wonder why you were ever scared in the first place

good luck!!!

laughing gas :)

I had the same problem. I had not been in years!!! But I started going again last year and had crazy anxiety. I was sooo sure I had a cavity in every tooth...sorta as punishment for not going for regular visits like I was suposed to.....but It was really not that bad. They hygenist cleaned my teeth, and the dentist checked em out....no cavities. The only part that was uncomfortable to me was when they flossed my teeth. Its just weird when someone else does it. ya know? If you have a cavity they usually make you reschedule for a later date to get a filling.

Just tell the dentist that you have a very low threshold for pain. After the first shot, he'll poke around a bit. If you can feel anything, get another shot. The pain of the shot will be less due to the novacaine... but once again, when he starts probing, if you feel anything, get another shot. After 5 or 6, the lower half of your face will be numb. Then just close your eyes, and tell him to tap your arm when it's over.
