My son has Cavities and his only 15months old?!

Question: I took my son to the Dentis and he told me he has already cavities and he said that the only way to save his teeth is by removing them. My son only has 4 on top and 3 on the bottom, and i don't know having his teeth removed at his age is scary as it is for me as, it is for my baby. The Dentist told me does he has pain, and i said, "no" he said if he has problem eating and i said, "no" everything is normal chase the way his teeth look. and the dentis told me if sleeps with a baby bottle and i said, "yes". and well it's hard for a baby at his age to sleep without a bottle, he wake up everytime at night looking for his milk or juice. But there isn't another way for him not having his teeth removed. the doctor said to wait three month too see if his teeth grow alittle more to see what can they do to safe his teeth. But if they do remove his teeth is it safe, you know because they have to put him to sleep and, how long is he going to be without his teeth, is he going to be able to eat?

Sorry to tell you this but your child has bottles caries.
Did your dentist tell it has probably been caused by putting your bub to bed with a bottle...it is true. The mouth has bacteria which will hapily feed on the sugar you are unknowingly providing by way of giving juice or milk.
You can put your baby to sleep with water, and if they wake needing a feed then you need to get up and feed him...sorry to tell it to you like this but it's all true.

Your dentist is not bad! and you are not a bad mother! just an uneducated one in your baby's dental health. I work for a public dental service and I see so many children come in like some of the worst photos in the links below. You're really lucky if he is not in pain (yet). Keep down this track and he definately will be.

The teeth are decayed under the gum as they come through so it is possible other teeth are also effected.

The best thing you can do is start making those changes now,
no juice/milk when put to bed (this will take time as your son has developed a habit of waking to a bottle now, so be patient), cleaning teeth after feeds (even a wipe over with a cloth with some baby toothpaste is better than nothing).

It's never too late to start.

Even though your baby will get a second set of teeth, these do not start to come through until your son is about 5 to 6 years old and will come through over several years until he is 12-13 years, and most dentists do not make false teeth for children (dentures are also not cheap), so your child will be without those teeth until then. Please do not think that you don't need to care for his first set of teethbecause these are ment to last until his permanent teeth develop.

All the best for you and your son.

Here's also a link to a good mummy forum that is discussing tooth health.

they will probably give him fake teeth to replace the ones that they take out. these fake ones will fall out around the same time the baby teeth would fall out. its okay. this happened to my cousin too when she was two.

If the doc is going to remove the teeth he is just going to grow adult teeth later on. Just give your baby a quick brush or rinse everytime he drinks milk... Its not the end of the world...he will still grow teeth.

There called baby teeth, and the nice thing is, they fall out. You've got a second chance coming honey. don't worry.

holy crap what are you feeding him

please if he doesnt have pain ,do not have them removed,

That is what pacifiers are for. I have never heard of a baby having such tooth decay that they need removed. Are you being investigated yet?

shouldnt give a baby a bottle to sleep with especially if its juice or milk. way to go mom.

uhhh why cant you say a 1 year and 3 months old i hate when people do that and second are you brushing his teeth everyday . and if he has a cavities that did not reach the pulp of the tooth they are not going to remove the teeth they will just fill it if it did reach the pulp well a root canal. and second please make sure you don't put your child to sleep after drinking milk or juice the juice will ruin his teeth because of the sugar thats left behind. and also take him off the bottle get him one of those no spill sip cups.

you need to find another dentist, dont trust just one opinion , it isvery posible to put little caps on your baby's teeth you are simply going to have to brush his teeth, treat him with childrens fluoride, and let him cry for his bottle at night, try feeding him really good before bed, that way you have peace of mind he's not hungry, he'll get used to it eventually, it is better than not having teeth again till he's 8 years old, plus, do you want him to be the laughing stock of other children when he goes to school? listen to reason

sounds suspicious to me. i had a lot of trouble with bad dentistry when i was a kid. get a second opinion.

if the all the kids teeth are rotten enough to need to be pulled, I think he would be screaming.

Most babies sleep without a bottle in thier mouths...
The sugar in milk is one of thethe worst things for teeth.

Please dont believe people who say "they are only baby teeth, they get another set" because those baby teeth help in the proper development in the facial structure, and speech development, not to mention he will most likely be teased ruthlessly by other children.

Quit giving him a bottle with anything other than water if you must lay him down with one - and get a second opinion just to be on the safe side.

First of all, get rid of the bottle. Throw it (and all others) away, and let him see you do it. He will fuss about it, but you'll win in the end.... and be patient with him, he's going to be craaaaaaaaanky about it!

He's old enough to drink from one of those sippy-cups. Let him pick out the color(s) and which one he wants. Praise him for being a big boy every time he uses it. When it'es time for bed, of course he's going to expect the bottle...remind him how they were tossed since he's a big boy now...and give him a drink of water instead, but don't leave the cup in the crib/bed with him.

As far as having the teeth removed, get a second opinion from a pedodontist and not a general dentist, since they specialize in children.

Best of luck to you!

:)
