When an orthodontist puts braces on, they use a special appliance to stretch your mouth open (it's not painful at all, don't worry) to give them easy access to all of your teeth. They put a small dollop of dental cement onto the dry, sterile surface of the tooth (another reason they stretch your mouth open - they don't want the saliva from the inside of your mouth to touch the teeth and wet the surface) and then place a bracket (the small metal square) on the cement. It dries, and the brackets are attached very firmly to your teeth.

Then they lay a specially-cut wire across the center of the brackets (they have four raised "teeth", one on each corner, and a space in the middle where the wire lays flat) and slip the wire through a metal band placed around the very back molar on each side (which is what the spacers were placed for, to make room for the bands). They bend and snip the wire so that it fits tightly and lays over all of the brackets. Then they take the small rubber bands (you pick which color you'd like) and wrap them tightly around the "teeth" on the brackets, to hold the wire firmly into place.

After that, viola! You have braces. Your teeth will hurt for a few days after, so take a pain reliever like Advil or ibuprofen BEFORE your appointment, and continue taking it every 6-8 hours for a few days after. Good luck!

They glue the braces individually to each tooth then attatch them with wires and rubber bands.

I don't know what they call the thing they hold your mouth open with

well, it takes 2 hours, they put a thing in your mouth that holds it open, and they take the brackets(thing the braces are made of) then they cement them in, no pain at all, just a dry mouth at the end, but the following night and next week there gona hurt so bad, because your teeth are not ust to moving.

With the lips and tongue held back by a clear plastic retractor, an etching agent is applied for 60 seconds to each tooth. This prepares the enamel to accept the bonding agents which hold the bracket to the tooth. After 60 seconds, the etch is rinsed off and a sealant chemical is applied to each tooth for about 5 seconds to treat the enamel so the light cured bonding material "sticks" to the tooth. The doctor carefully places each bracket in exactly the right place on the tooth with a small tweezer. The bracket is then checked for angulation and any adjustments are made before activating the bonding material which is between the back of the bracket and the tooth. The bonding agent will not set until exposed to a strong ultra violet light. This gives us time to adjust the bracket to just the right spot on the tooth. The plasma light is shown on the bracket for about 3 seconds to activate and set the bonding material. After all the brackets are placed, a soft, body temperature activated wire is placed and held in the bracket with a soft plastic ligature on each bracket. The ligatures come in various colors and can be changed at each appointment. It sounds a lot worse than it actually it so no worries!!

Braces really are not as bad as everybody thinks they are.
To put them on, they glue the bracket ( the part that sticks to your tooth ) onto your tooth. Its VERY secure and take a lot to get it off. Then they snap in a wire between the bracket. This slowly brings your teeth together.
You will have you wire changed around every 1 or 2 months.
Its really quite easy, just remember to brush regularly and stay away from foods that cold damage your braes. Especially on the first 2 wires. They are the weakest.
It doesn't even hurt that much. It feels like you have bitten to hard on something, the pain you get after that. Its like that, just more intense and lasts for longer.
You will get used to them!
Good luck.

well i just got mine off like 2 weeks ago =)

and when i first got them on it didnt hurt at all! it just felt a little wierd but then a couple hours later pain started to come as the braces started straightening my teeth. but then 4 days later the pain was gone. so just prepare your self get some pain killers and try not to eat hard food for the first couple of days... the more u get use to having braces tighten the less it will hurt and the less pain.

you wont be getting a boy friend any time soon

Braces are pretty simple. You'll be in the chair for a couple hours, but it will go by fast. They will be working on your mouth so much you wont know it's been hours. There will be some pressure, and a lot of people say its pain. The brackets will get glued to your teeth and the wires put on how they need them. Take Ibuprofen after you leave (with food) if you do feel pain. There will be a lot of wires sticking out of your mouth for a while. And with that thing, all it is is something to hold your mouth open, there is nothing special to it. Your mouth will get dry, which isn't a comfortable thing, but, like I said, it will go by fast. They will explain all the things you need to do with the braces, and it will be a lot of information.

I'm wearing braces myself and the spacers hurt me more than the braces until they used a heavier energy chain. They glue bands around your wisdom teeth in the back, glue brackets on each individual tooth, and then attach the wire to each bracket. Take a couple of Tylenol before you go for your visit. They put the top braces on a couple of months before the bottom. The top didn't hurt at all but my bottom did. It could have been because the bottom teeth were in worse shape than the top. Just eat soft foods for the next couple of days after getting them.

Well they use a sealant to keep the brackets on. People typically are scared of getting them off because of horror stories and other rumors but they just use pliers and squeeze the sides of the bracket and it will just pop right off (they don't yank on your teeth with the pliers or anything).

I'm not quite understanding your second question but I will answer it as best as I can. If your talking about the dental appliance that widens your mouth it is called an expander. During the procedure to get your braces they use a plastic type thing that holds your mouth open but it doesn't hurt or anything.

After getting your braces on your teeth will probably hurt a little so I would recommend taking some Advil or Ibuprofen before you get them put on.
