White patch on tongue?!

Question: I've had a white patch on my tongue for about 2-3yrs now. I went to the Dentist once and he said it is just where my tooth rubs but I am worried it is more. Do you have any clue what it could be?

where is it located on your tongue? (What tooth is directly adjacent to it?) Do you ever notice yourself biting that area or feel it rub? Has it increased in size? Do you smoke? Do you dip? Does oral cancer run in your family? These are all questions you should ask yourself! White lesions on the tongue are never something to play around with. Did your dentist do a cancer screening, or send you to an oral surgeon to take a biopsy? How old are you? Sorry to bombard you with questions, but I am a dental hygiene student and like I said, white lesions on the tongue concern me b/c cancer in the mouth metastasize very quickly. I urge you to get a second opinion.

There's a possibility that it's thrush (a bacterial infection). Have you talked to your regular doctor about it?

Get a second opinion. You could have a yeast tongue. That would depend on where the patch is on your tongue though.

2-3 years.. That's a bit long.

Does it bother you at all? Does it hurt?

If it got bigger, it could be cancer.

Go to a doctor immediately.

No one could diagnosis you without seeing it first. Sorry. But, it could be thrush or a bacterial infection. Try to see a doctor and ask for some antibiotics. It might clear up, if not then make an appointment with a ENT. This is an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor.
