A question for those who have had Zoom teeth whitening?!

Question: My husband got me Zoom teeth whitening for Valentines Day. He had his done Wednesday and his teeth were so sore and painful and the inside of his lips were burned. Does this usually happen. Is this bad for your teeth. My teeth are pretty white anyway and I'm thinking about backing out. I guess I'm panicking a little. I don't want to do anything that weakens or hurts my teeth!

Zoom whitening is a much higher concentration of the active ingredient in over the counter whitening products so that it can be done in 1 visit. It's pretty caustic which is why they isolate your teeth, your husband's lip would have gotten burned if it touched the whitening gel. Also, with any whitening there is a increased chance of tooth sensitivity and the most with one shot products like Zoom. You can start preventively brushing with a sensitivity toothpaste a week before your Zoom appointment and keep it up for a few weeks afterwards and that will help a lot with that. Other than the temporary sensitivity it's not bad for your teeth. Just make sure they cover your gums very well with the isolating gel that hardens, and that they put plenty of cotton rolls between your lips and gums and cheeks to hold those tissues away from the teeth, and be careful to not lick your teeth or suck your lips over your teeth when the whitening gel is on them.

If he had it at a dental office there should be absolutely NO burned lips and hardly anything at all burned if properly done. If he used the at home kit, he put way too much in the tray and needs to lighten the load greatly. There should only be enough in the try to put it on and it squishes to the fronts of the teeth, NOT onto the gums. Immediately wipe anything other than teeth that gets this stuff on it. A dental office should have applied a rubber dam to protect his gums and had an appliance to hold his lips out. The main problem with zoom whitening is normally sensitivity afterward. Use a fluoride rinse 2 times a day for a while or Use sensitivity toothpaste. With both, DO NOT RINSE/EAT/DRINK for at least 30 minutes afterward. Just spit either the rinse or the toothpaste out. Rinsing rinses all the active ingredient off. Try to do it always immediately after whitening to reduce sensitivity. Also, make sure the dentist or dental hygienist does this, NOT an assistant.
