How do I get rid of an abcess and HUGE canker sore in my mouth?!

Question: I have an abcess on the roof of my mouth, so I can't swallow very much without it hurting. It's a real pain so I really want it to go away as fast as possible. I heard that you can take antibiotics for it. Is it true? If so, where can I get it? And if I take the antibiotics, do I still have to go to the dentist? On top of all that, I also have a huge canker sore on my gum. Will listarene take care of it? Should I do something else for it? Please answer quickly! Thanks.

Dear Mgina,

This Aphthous Ulcer, or commonly known as a canker sore, is usually caused by scraping the inside of the cheek, or tongue with your teeth. But at some point in time, you will get one just because you can't control when or where they happen. There is hardly any way to treat this sore other than to gently swish with peroxide, or just a small sum of your daily mouthwash. Do this at least twice a day, to care for the recent sore, and to prevent new sores from appearing overnight.

If this procedure doesn't take effect in less than two weeks, or gets worse, talk to your doctor to organize an appointment. He or she will most likely provide a special treatment for that pesky agitating pain.

Thank you so much for your question! :)
(Check my source for details)

antibiotics will take away the infection. go to the dentist. if it's infected, then the infection can travel to your heart and kill you. it happens (rare, but can). please go.

you should swish hydrogen peroxide in your mouth...that should help you out.

Yes, go to the dentist to see about antibiotics.

About the canker sores, I use to get them all the time as a kid. They use to burn them out, OUCH! I don't get them like I use to.

Now, my dentist actually gave me something for them. It is also by prescription and it kind of gums up and spreads over your teeth, which I don't like, but it doesn't burn and it helps it go away pretty quickly. It is a paste. It is called Triamcinolone Acetonide Dental Paste USP, 0.1%

Ask about it when you go get the antibiotics for your abscess. I will pray for your mouth to heal quickly.

Canker sores are not caused by bacteria. therefor antibiotics are of little use. They usually dissipate after two weeks. A sore on the roof of you mouth is probably not a canker sore. If you have no improvement in 2 weeks go to the dentist.

The dentist can actually prescribe you the antibiotics. You have to be careful with any infection in your head or neck regions. Infections travel quickly through the lymph nodes in the head and can end up going to the brain and causing severe damage and possibly death. Get this taken care of asap! Until you get it taken care of, the pain can be numbed with ambasol or orajel. They also have canker sore medicine/topical over the counter.
