Need dental help and advice fast please!?!

Question:

Need dental help and advice fast please!?

Hi everyone,

My problem is that my upper left second molar starts to experience dull pain for the past couple of days. That particular tooth has always given me trouble, and is the only bad one I have. I have had that tooth drilled and filled three times in the past 6 month due to apparent cavity at the side. The gum is not infected at all, nor has the tooth erupt.

What should I do? I'm a bit unhappy about the dentist who did the procedure, because I don't believe that a new cavity can develop that fast. Could it be due to malpractice when he gave me the composite filling? What should I do now?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Here is my professional advice, which I am qualified to give as a licensed dentist:

A dull constant ache in the tooth means the nerve inside the tooth has become so irritated that it is dying. Eventually, the tooth will become abscessed and you will need to do one of two things: Either get the tooth extracted, or keep the tooth by cleaning out the dying nerve (Root Canal Therapy) and put a post + crown on it.

If the cavity was so deep to start with, the nerve might have started dying even before the filling was placed on it. If that's the case, it's not your dentist's fault.

Composite fillings are indeed done quite commonly for posterior teeth these days and is an accepted standard of care.

If you feel the dentist did not do it right, you should ask for a copy of your patient chart and X-rays (but you must pay for the duplication services), and have other dentist take a look at the records and give an evaluation of your current state to see what was done. If many of them agree something was not done right, then you might have a case for filing a complaint.

However, what happened to you occurs quite often and most of the time it's not the dentist's fault.
