It doesn't hurt to have your braces tightened, but you could be a tad sore just from the teeth moving. It will get easier. Take Tylenol or Motrin for discomfort.
It depends on how much correction is needed that will determine how long you'll have your braces on for. Some could be as little as 6 months, some I've heard have been upwards of 5 years. Everyone is different. Ask your orthodontist what he/she thinks.
You can eat yogurt, Jello, bananas, rice, mashed potatoes, soup, etc.
