I got my wisdom teeth pulled friday, and I think that I have dry socket.?!

Question:

I got my wisdom teeth pulled friday, and I think that I have dry socket.?

They had me clean the area out with a syringe, and I did, afterwards the area where they removed my tooth started bleeding bad. I woke up this morning and it was still bleeding so i went into the dentist.

They got these cotton ball things with this gel on them and stuck them in the holes. Now, when I look at the area where they removed my tooth, its black. Is this bad? Why would the hole be black? is it ok for me to eat and all that? How should I clean it out after I eat? please help!

Answers:

You can drink and eat, stay with a soft diet for a few days. I always recommend that patients refer back to their first post op instructions and follow that since you really are starting over with forming a new clot.

Just use caution so you don't dislodge the packing, it will dissipate on it's own as you heal. I would "not" recommend using the syringe to cleanse the socket area now as you may dislodge the packing. Tomorrow you can do very gentle warm salt water rinses. The use of a syringe is something that I've never given out, or advised patients to use due to the possibility of this very situation happening.

So just go back to your original post op instructions and do not use the syringe or attempt to clean the socket out. Let this sit and dissolve on its own. Soft diet, nothing carbonated or hot, warm soups and such are fine, no straws or smoking as this can cause the clot to dislodge. Take it easy for another day or two and continue with any medications given. If you have any further questions or problems you should discuss this with your dentist or OS since they are familiar with your condition and any problems or difficulty that occurred with your procedure. Hope I've been of some help and good luck with your healing, I'm sure you will do fine.

Additional information: The continued bleeding after the extraction was preformed is an indication that the clot never formed, so you would not have experienced the pain of a dry socket. The black you see is the packing material that will stimulate the formation of a new clot. Its not bad, its normal. Do only gentle warm salt water swishing after eating for the next few days.

The bad breath is normal following an extraction. Be sure to floss, brush your teeth and tissue well to include your tongue but avoid the extraction sites so you don't disturb the clots also use warm salt water to rinse with several times a day. You should notice an immediate difference in your breath after cleaning the tissue and tongue along with your teeth. It won't be long before you can resume your normal dental hygiene.
