Cavities? What does the dentist do?!

Question:

Cavities? What does the dentist do?

I was at the dentist office getting a minor cavity filled and was wondering what exactly is he doing? What's up with the drilling and the filling?

Answers:

He (or she) removes the decay, drills out the eroded part of the tooth so that it will not have any sharp edges or thin sections. An anti-bacterial or flouride strengthening solution may be applied. Then a filling is put in, which restores the structural integrity of the tooth, so that it as strong as it was originally. The filling is trimmed so that it's contours are smooth and it fits perfectly into the hole. Voila!... you're good for 30 or more years, but stay away from sugar and carbonated beverages.
