Lots of things can cause canker sores. See the link below for some good, general info.
Strawberries and fresh pineapple give them to me. I also got the most terrible ones when I started wearing elastics on my braces. Took me a month to realize what what causing those. Duh...I'm allergic to latex, what did I expect.
The best treatment I have found is something called Kanka. The original comes in a small blue bottle in the dental section of the drug store. I don't think it is quite as strong, but I like their Soft Brush Gel because it is so much easier to apply. They are about $6-$8.
