If a baby tooth gets knocked out early, how long should it take to grow the perm!

Question:

If a baby tooth gets knocked out early, how long should it take to grow the permanent one?

My son's tooth was knocked out when he was three. He is now almost 8 and the tooth has been on the brink of emerging but won't come out of the gums. Is this normal??

I have taken him to the dentist and he insists it will come through. I'm beginning to question that it will. It has been gone for 5 years. The one next to it has fallen out and grown back and that one just seems to not want to make any progress.

Answers:
