Nervous wreck dentist appointment?!

Question: im 16 and i have a dentist appointment tommorow morning. i dont know why but i am freaking out so bad. usually i get a little nervous before a dentist appt, but this time i am just freaking out. i get panic attacks a lot when i leave to go to the dentist and i dont want to get another one. i got a new dentist and she is really nice and everything, so i dont understand why im so scared, but i think its cause i think i might have a cavity. last check up she said i had one on this tooth, really smally though that it didnt need a filling, and now i think it might have gotten bigger. ive only had one other cavity and it was so small they didnt even have to give me a shot or anything, they just filled it up. anyways im scared im going to have a panic attack while at the dentist, and i dont need that. how can i calm down before i go. i mean my dentist is really nice and talks to me and everything when she cleans my teeth, but my hearts pounds hard, and i start shakingalitte. i get so nervous.

A lot of people get anxious when they go to the dentist. It's comforting to hear that you like your dentist. That should make things a little easier...right?
I also suffer from panic attacks and I know how awful they are. The only advice I can give to you is to try to trick yourself. Close your eyes and breathe.
Since your dentist is so nice....try to talk to her about your fears and anxiety. She will understand and try to make you feel more comfortable. Dentist are highly educated in psycology and fears of "the dentist". These days dentists are more understanding and try to make a trip to their office as stress free as possible.
I'm sure the thought of an injection is frightening. It is really not as bad as it may seem. Dentist's don't just "jabb" you anymore. They use methods to reduce pain and discomfort at the injection site.
If you do have to have a cavity filled, it is possible to ask that she try to work on you without getting numb. If it starts to hurt you can ask to get numb.
Some office's still use Nitrious. This may be an option for you, since you are too young to take a narcotic. Discuss your options with your parents and your dentist before you have your cavity filled.
Remember, anxiety is all in your head. You can control it. As you get older it will get easier to control. Staying positive is one good coping skill. Talk yourself out of whatever is giving you anxiety. And, always remember, when you start to feel anxious....relax your body, breathe and talk to yourself...Telll yourself " Everything is fine, I am overreacting, calm down." That is the healthiest way to deal with it.
RX drugs are another, but they are not good for you and could lead to other issues.
I am a dental assistant and I have seen it all! You are not alone.
I am sure you will be fine. Just because of the fact that you like your dentist makes a world of difference!!!!
I wish you luck....and stay positive! :)

just relax they arent going to hurt you. i was like this when i was young untill i got my braces then going to the dentist every month 2times was like piece of cake just take it easy! you'll be fine remember to breath from your nose

Do you have a portable music player you can bring with you? It may help if you just "tune out" during your cleaning, and focus on the music. Listening to music can be a great distraction technique to help keep you calm.
