Advice for avoiding dry sockets after wisdom tooth extraction?!

Question:

Advice for avoiding dry sockets after wisdom tooth extraction?

I just got my wisdom teeth extracted this morning. I'm actually feeling pretty good. I am terrified of getting dry sockets. Any advice on how to avoid getting them? And any other advice on how to help with the healing of my gums. (My doc did give me a good list, I just wanted to see if anyone knew of anything from experience) Thanks!

Answers:

The best thing to do is follow your doc's orders, which probably include the following:

1. No straws.
2. No smoking.
3. No sucking of any kind until healed.
4. Soft diet chewed with the remaining teeth.
5. Saline rinses (warm salt water flushes out the socket)

At least, these are the ones we give out at my hospital where I'm a nurse in the surgical recovery room. Hope it helps!!
