You should take it off for sure! If you have the clear plastic retainer, DON'T soak it in mouth wash unless the mouthwash is clear colored. If you soak it in blue or green (or any other color) it will turn the clear retainer an awful color.
If you have a wire retainer you take that out and brush it as well. You can dump mouthwash over it, but I wouldn't soak it in mouth wash.
take it off, and brush the whole thing. I used to soak mine in mouthwash too.
