what was the least amount of time (in months or years) has someone had to keep his braces on 'till his dentist professionally thought it was time to take them off? .......(typical braces cases) not including those with special considerations...

Well, most usual case I leave the braces on for about 2 years for a full set of braces, because that is how long it takes the teeth to set set permanently. If you have any more questions you maybe should ask your orthodontist, or at least your normal dentist.
