I just came back from the dentist...he keeps telling me that i need a deep clean!

Question: Anyone else have this...did you have it done? did it help the problem or are we just looking at another way of racking up a bill?

I just had this done in August, it didn't hurt at all! It made a Huge difference in my teeth, and I'm so glad that I went through with it. You usually have to get one every 6 months(which now that I think about it, its time for me to go back). BE STRONG, YOU WILL BE JUST FINE!!!

my orthadontist tells me that...to fix this problem, i would use a good quality electric toothbrush, and reach right above your top row of teeth and brush up there for about 25 seconds, i hope this advice helps u and good luck!

LANEK,
THIS IS MORE ACCURATELY CALLED SCALING AND ROOT PLANING. THIS IS NOT A RIP OFF BUT A NECESSARY TREATMENT TO REMOVE TARTAR AND PLAQUE BELOW THE GUMS.
I HAVE OFTEN DONE THIS FOR MY PATIENTS.
THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE USING SPECIAL DENTAL INATRUMENTS AND THERE IS NO TOOTHBRUSH THAT CAN DO THIS.
FYI 75% OF AMERICAN ADULTS NEED THIS PROCEDURE.

It will help, but only if you keep up on your home care.

My 18 year old daughter just had it done about a month ago. The dentist told us that if the tarter and plaque continued to build up under her gums then she would start loosing bone density. Which means eventually her teeth would start falling out. It's not another way for them to rack up a bill (yet it is a little expensive IF you don't have insurance), but most insurances pay at least 70% of the cost. I ended up paying about $300.00 out of pocket for the procedure.

The procedure was done in 2 visits and took about 45 minutes to an hour for each visit (she also had cavities filled at the same time). First they did the upper and lower on the right side and the next visit they did the upper and lower on the left side. Next time (if anyone else in my family has to have it done), I will request that they just put them to sleep and do it all at once. Don't know if that is possible but I will request it.

But, now that she has had it done, she is relieved and plans on taking much better care of her teeth in the future. And, her first step is getting braces on next month.

So, my advice. Have it done. It may be an uncomfortable experience and the cost isn't really that bad if you consider the other options which is either having all your teeth pulled and having dentures eventually orrrrr all of your teeth possibly falling out in the future.

Good Luck!!!

Periodontal disease is no joke. It is a real thing and there is a real treatment. You have taken the first step.. Now you need to continue with the steps to achieve a healthy mouth. You will never be free of this problem but it can be maintained at a certain level depending on how bad it is when you are diagnosed and how vigilant you are about seeing your dentist and hygienist. Good for you for getting started. Don't be scared and don't quit half way. Your teeth and health are important.

There is no way that you are ever going to get the right answer on here. None of us can see your xrays, see a periochart on you, see how much tartar you have below your gumline, or know how much, if any, mobility you have in your teeth. These are all the things that a dentist uses to determine if a patient needs a deep cleaning. You haven't offered us any information as to why he wants you to get one. Periodontal disease is an epidemic and if left untreated, can cause you to loose your teeth and can cause infection to be spread throughout your body.

If you dont understand why you need this, ask. He should be more than willing to explain why you need this and what condition your gums, bone and teeth are in.

I have never had it done, but yes, I have seen many patients who have and it really helped their condition, as long as they continued the recommended home care and follow up appointments.
