Screw in a rod? It sounded very painful?!

Question:

Screw in a rod? It sounded very painful?

Screwing a rod and crowning, is it more painful than root canal. I had a root canal done before on my top inciser, and it's just barbaric, it tooked about 3 hours to finish. Is crewing a rod more painful than a root canal? and how long will it take?

(had a very bad experience with root canal last time, since the anesthesia weared off in the middle of the procedure.)

Answers:

From my experience as a dental assistant, the "rod" is used as part of a root canal in order to strengthen your teeth. It will not be any more painful than a root canal, but it sounds like you had a bad experience with your past root canal.

Suggestions... find a dentist that has nitrous oxide. Root canals do take a while in order to be accurate and the nitrous oxide will help you relax during the process. Also, bring headphones and a CD player so that you can listen to music during the process. Lastly, if you recognize that the numbness is wearing off even in the slightest, let your dentist know immediately. In only takes a few minutes to put a little more anesthetic in the area. If a dentist refuses to give you more anesthetic, you might want to rethink your dentist.
