I'm getting a regular molar removed by an oral surgeon this wk. Last time I had !

Question:

I'm getting a regular molar removed by an oral surgeon this wk. Last time I had a tooth out by a dentist. Will

Will this be more comfortable for me? The tooth I'm having out this time is a molar that had been filled 3 times, all fell out...and was abcessed last summer. There isn't much actual tooth left either. 1 little piece sticks up out of my molar band (for my braces). I'll be getting 5 mg of Valium...and not sure if I will be able to get Nitrous Oxide, but i WANT it!!!!!
Will the oral surgeon give it to me after I take my Valium??!

Will I be SLEEPY with just the 5 mg of Valium????! Cuz last time I had 4 regular teeth out (not molars) and I was wide awake, and it was a horrible experience!!!

Answers:

While I wouldn't want to describe the procedure as "comfortable", it really is a routine procedure. That means that with adequate anesthesia and gentle hands of your surgeon, the procedure should be over before you know it.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to say whether 5 mg of Valium would be sufficient to make you sleepy. It depends on several factors.

Tolerance is a term applied to describe the increase in dose required to attain the same clinical effect. People differ in their degree of tolerance. Simply put 5mg. may be more than enough for some people but at the same time have practically no effect fo others.

Other drugs taken with Valium may increase or decrease its efficacy. For instance, Diphenhydramine (e.g. Benadryl) can increase potency of Valium.

Your degree of apprehension may affect the efficacy of Valium. If your level of anxiety is extremely high, 5mg may not suffice.

There are clinics that offer nitrous oxide sedation. This is a relatively safe method. If your surgeon does not have nitrous oxide equipment you may request that your procedure be done in a hospital where sedation or even general anesthesia can be delivered if you desire.
