Does your dentist ask about your insurance?!

Question:

Does your dentist ask about your insurance?

I went in for a second opinion today because my cheek was swollen after getting my filling done. I like the experience with the 2nd dentist. Before seeing him, I gave the secretary my insurance information. I ask the dentist if he does general checkups and he said yes. Also, he asked if I had insurance.

That puts me off a little bit. Is this a common follow-up question to new patients? I was wearing my work clothes.

Answers:

Not all dentists are out to make a profit at the expense of the patients or insurance companies. The dentist was likely just asking about your insurance to see what services would be covered. Honestly, he was probably just wondering if he could take x-rays, etc. Believe it or not, not all insurance companies pay for x-rays, at least not a full mouth series or panoramic ones and certain insurance companies only pay for a prophalaxis (cleaning and polish) every so often. Insurance companies are getting stingy these days. And I'm sure he doens't want to do a boat load of work, just to find out your insurance doesn't cover it, and you end up being stuck with a gigantic bill.

I would thank him for asking about insurance before he plows ahead. I had a root canal a couple weeks ago. The dentist asked if I had insurance (I don't) and he wrote off the entire bill for me. I didn't have to pay a dime.
