What does a plastic brace to prevent your jaw closing too far do exactly?!

Question: I've recetly had my first orthodontist apointment, where I was told that my front teeth completely cover my lover front teeth when my mouth is shut. Because of this, I will need to have a plastic brace for a while to change it or I would just bite right through a train track brace. What does the brace do? And is it permanant? Will I ever be able to shut my mouth completely after it is removed? And if my teeth are not allowed to meet, how do I eat? If any ex-brace wearers had this same problem, any light you could shed on the matter would be appreciated.

It sounds like you are going to have a biteplate along with your braces. This is made either as a removable biteplate with special clasps to hook around your molar bands or usually done as a fixed biteplate. This is made by attaching the biteplate to the bands and fits on the roof of your mouth.

Either way, at first your molars do not touch and it is difficult to eat. But your teeth move and the molars will erupt more and eventually touch. This can happen within the first month having the appliance. Then you will be able to eat fine and your bite will be opened so that the treatment can proceed.

Once the bite is opened sufficiently and will stay that way, the biteplate will be discontinued. It works great for opening the bite in deep bite cases.
