If you offer them breath mints or gum make sure it's sugar free. If the bad breath is coming from an infected tooth/cavity, putting something in his mouth with sugar will only make the tooth rot faster and spread to other teeth.
I would ask him in a way that makes him think your concern is not his breath, but about his health. I would ask if his mouth tasted funny or if one of his teeth hurt because it smells "funny." If he goes to the dentist, they can address the problem. They can find out if something is wrong with his teeth, gums, or if just needs a cleaning.
Sure he'll be embarrassed, but not in the same way if said, "Baby, your breath is rank, go to the dentist."
