Sore palate?!

Sore palate?
The front part of my palate is really sore. It feels swollen and hurts especially when I heat things that aren't very soft. My gums have also swollen. There is no discolouration, perhaps only a bit more redened. I maintain good oral hygine with brushing and more recently mouthwashes.
Why is my palate so sore? Gingivitis may explain why I have sore gums, but has that got anything to do with my palate? What can I do about it?

Edit: I have a bit of a cold but no sore throat.

If you haven't had your teeth professionally cleaned in a while this can explain this. It could be periodontal disease or something else. Have it looked at just in case. It could be possible oral cancer (not likely) but have it checked.
