My wisdom teeth were pulled - severe bleeding imo?!

Question:

My wisdom teeth were pulled - severe bleeding imo?

I'm not sure what is normal in post-op for wisdom teeth extractions. So please help if possible. It is now 2:30am, I had all four wisdom teeth taken out yesterday, the procedure finished around 5pm. About every 15-30 minutes I replace the gauze, the left side of gauze is extremely bloody. The best comparison as to how much blood it contains is grossly similar to a tampon on my first day. So since it's okay when that happens, this is fine right? I don't mean to gross anyone out, and I'm sorry if I did. I just hope it's not harmful for me when that much blood is coming out. Within 5 minutes of placing the gauze, I can feel and taste an excessive amount of blood already absorbed on the left. There isn't much pain. I have been sleeping on and off since 11pm, so sometimes the gauze is not replaced in the aforementioned time slot. I want to go back to the oral surgeon in the morning, but don't want to if this is a normal process. Thank you, and any help is appreciated.

Answers:

While it is normal to have minimal bleeding after removal of teeth it shouldn't be as you have described it. Normally this should appear as a faint red stain when you gargle. In fact it shouldn't be necessary for you to apply a gauze pack after an hour.

Contrary to one of the suggestion that you have been offered by one of those who responded to your inquiry, you shouldn't rinse too often. This may only serve to disturb the clot even more. If you have to garle, do it with gently. NO VIGOROUS MOUTHWASHING WITH STRONG ANTISEPTICS.

See your oral surgeon and have the area checked. Commonly, the cause of bleeding is something that was left behind or lodged into the extraction site.
