And it Really hurts.

I'm betting on an abscessed tooth. Been there done that. Not pleasant. My tooth had to be extracted way back then. Don't know if there are newer procedures now.
It is probably a canker sore. Rinse with warm salt water 2-3x a day.
It could be your wisdom teeth comming in possibly
may be an ulcer. Just use salt water gaggle.
food can be stuck in between the teeth
