Is it ok if my retainer is not tight anymore?!

Question: Well, I didn't wear my bottom retainer for about 6 months and my teeth shifted a little bit. Then I started wearing them again, and within a week, my retainers were no longer tight. They feel a bit loose. Would that be ok? Can they still retain my teeth? Can they also push my teeth back to straight again even though the retainer is loose or do I have to go get it tightened again?

A retainer is meant to fit nicely so as to prevent your teeth from moving outwards.

If they are loose, it means that they will not be able to prevent any movement of your teeth until they touch it.

You should visit your dentist to get it checked.

When it gets loose, all that means is that the retainer has done it's job and straightened your teeth. It's time for a check up though, go to the orthodontist and get them tightened again!!

ask the experts i.e doc

Having all sorts of unflattering dentist wear when i was young, I thought the purpose of a retainer was to keep your teeth in the right position for a long period of time. Mine always touched my teeth.

If you have not been to the dentist for ages, I would probably make an appointment and get them tightened.
