Doctors/Dentists please?!

Question:

Doctors/Dentists please?

This morning i woke up with a swollen cheek and pain in the gum on the whole of the right side of my face (bottom set of teeth only) i did have all of my wisdom teeth out but this was in May (also the wisdom tooth on the bottom right side was the most painful extraction site) I have an appointment to see the dentist tonight but i always feel like i'm wasting his time with my minor problems! I have also just had something to eat and the swelling is still there but the pain has subsided, my mum said it may be an infection-is this the case? many thanks x

Answers:

If you are in pain and having trouble sleeping its sounds like an abscess, they usually flair up at night time making sleeping difficult, so thats why it probably feels better just now but it will get worse if you leave it, you are not wasting your dentists time, that is what he is there for, anyway if everyone thought that he would be out of a job! Your dentist will probably have a look and take an x-ray, if it is an abscess he will probably give you antibiotics to clear the infection, and decide what the best treatment is for you and give you another appointment for treatment to be carried out. The antibiotics will kill the pain but you must go back and have treatment as the abscess will come back with a vengeance if you dont,. I had this problem where my face was swollen and tender, luckily I worked in a dental surgery and when my boss looked at it, it turned out to be a blocked salivary gland, but your dentist will be able to let you know once they examine it.
