Should I remove one of my primary molar # 14?!

Question: I went to the dentist today and he inform me that i would need a root canal on one of my primary molar (#14) It has a hole in it. He does not want to perform an extraction. He claims if i recieve an extraction I will lose 60% of my chewing abilty. I dont know how true that it is. He could be telling me anything as long he get my money. Which the procedure cost $2000. What I really want to know.... has anyone every extract one of their primary molars? If so did you lose any of your chewing ability? Do it deform you any way? Or should I cough up the 2Gs and get the root canal or go the cheap route and get the extraction? Help !!!!!!

Every mouth is different. So its impossible to compare ur case with anyone else. U haven't mentioned ur age which makes it almost impossible to answer ur query. If u r above 12 n still have the primary molar it is best to retain it. From ur dentist's advise it seems ur second premolar which replaces the primary molar is absent.
In such a case if u get ur tooth extracted u will hve to go for a fixed bridge or removable to fill that gap. if that gap is left as such , it can affect ur whole mouth in long term. If u have permanent molars in place, extraction wouldn't affect chewing ability provided the gap is filled.
RC is good option to save any tooth which is salvagable. i can't comment absolutely as i donot know the condition of ur other teeth and the details.

I would say have the root canal. I know it is expensive, but it will be worth it. Have you got any dental insurance? If not ask about a payment arrangement.
I personally, have had a root canal, and an extraction on molars. Let me tell you, you will lose chewing ability, because I did, if I could go back, I would have had the root canal.

I'm sure if you remove it you will become quite consious of the gap and to fill te gap your looking at dentures, bridge or implant obviously the denture is the cheapest but your compliance to wear it is a negative factor and in terms of a bridge you need to consider the condition of the surrounding teeth(will they support a bridge) and the longevity as nothing manmade lasts forever and as for the an implant they are preferably done by a specialist. My advice is to try and save the tooth with a root canal preferably by an endodontist as this will decrease the chance of failure in the longterm, followed by what they have recommended(post, crown etc)
