Question:

How can I stop the decay in my teeth. I live in Nigeria.?

I am 54 years old. Five of my teeth have been extracted and I am having pains and holes in some. Can the decay be stopped.

Answers:

Once the decay is there it has to be cleaned out and a filling placed to stop it from decaying more. You can help to slow the process by brushing twice daily with toothpaste containing fluoride, use floss daily, use a fluoride mouthwash, stop eating sugary things like sweets & fizzy drinks, also try to cut down on anything acidic you eat such as oranges apples, diet fizzy drinks, as these will wear away the enamel surface exposing the dentine which is pourous which makes it easier for caries to start. Also try and visit a hygienist every 3-6 months to have them properly scaled and polished.
