Every time I brush my teeth, my gums bleed???!

Question:

Every time I brush my teeth, my gums bleed???

I just got my braces off a week ago, and since then my gums have been bleeding when I brush my teeth, every single times I brush. And it always burns after I rinse with water.
I remember them bleeding before I got braces, but when I got them, my gums never bleed. Until I got them off.
I dont brush hard. I do not know if I just have sensitive gums or what.

What should I do???
Please help!!!

Answers:

Usually after the removal of ortho you need to have a thorough professional cleaning done to make sure all of the cement is removed, check for decay that may have developed under the bands and that the teeth and gums are in good condition.

If your gums never bled while you were in ortho, and you took excellent care with flossing and brushing regularly, then you probably are brushing "too" hard. You are used to brushing with all the brackets and bands in place, they are gone so you need to lighten up on the pressure you are applying to the tissue and use a 45 degree angle with the tooth brush when brushing. Try flossing well, then brushing with a soft tooth brush and a little less pressure. Use some warm salt water rinses several times a day to help the tissue. Be sure to have the cleaning done as well.

If you had gingivitis, it wouldn't have developed as soon as the ortho was removed and the orthodontist would have mentioned this to you on more than one occasion. Be sure to have the cleaning done, they will make an assessment of your tissue at that time. I'm sure you are proud of your new smile, be sure to take good care of the teeth and gums. Good luck and remember to wear your retainer!
