My three-year-old nephew grinds at night!?!

Question: my three-year-old nephew (just turned three in November) just started grinding his teeth in his sleep a month or so ago... is there anything that can be done (at such a young age)? There's no way he'd wear a night guard..........

I worry because I have pretty severe TMJ (though I don't grind) and don't want him to ever get to the point I'm at!

I work at a dental office and my doctor would never make a night guard for a three year old. They are just too young. It is fairly normal for a toddler to grind at night (mine does and that's why I can answer this question!) So at three there's really not much you can do.

my dentist told me that most kids grind their teeth, but normally grow out of it. just keep checking with the dentist and make sure his teeth are doing ok.

well, i used to grindmy teeth every night too.it went on most of my life and i eventually grew out of it without even knowing! so your nephew will probably stop at some point in time, but for now you should keep a lookout and see if he does it during the daytime. if so than encourage him to stop and he should stop on his own.

Studies show that grinding teeth at such an early age has become frequent! this habit is called "Bruxism" and it so happens due to a lot of factors most importantly is stress! but wt type of stress does a 3 year old have , i wonder!
Seriously, dont worry i get alot of children that even show wear on their teeth cuz of that habit (meaning they have been doing it for so long and with such intensity)
this is only a reflection of the childs day and how peacful or un peacful it was!
is he an anxious, violent child, r his parents overloading him with rules, sibling rivalry? being supportive and soothing should decrease his anxiety thus decrease his habit.
Anyways, he does eventually overgrow it by 5-6 years when his permenant teeth erupt.
if he dint quit that habit beyond that age then u defintely have to go to a paediatric dentist.
P.S: some research done before pointed a relationship with intestinal parasites n bruxism, seems a far reach for me but im just reporting it anyways.

what is tmj...
