You will want to stick to soft foods for the first 24-72 hours. Use your best judgment, it's mainly the soreness that affects how long you should wait. Stay away from things like chips and popcorn.. anything that can get lodged in the socket, until it is healed. (At least a week or two) Your doctor should have given you instructions regarding eating and other post op instructions. In case not, you should avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or spitting. Brush your teeth like normal, but avoid the extraction site. Instead of spitting, lean over the sink and let it drain out. Anything that causes negative pressure in your mouth such as smoking, drinking through a straw, or spitting can dislodge the blood clot, causing a dry socket. You don't want one of those, trust me. Change your gauze as many times as you need to, but always leave it in for at least an hour. If it's bleeding longer than you think it should be, use a moist tea bag as gauze. (Tea has tanic acid, which acts as a blood clotting agent)

Generally 24 hours before you eat anything tough that requires chewing.
