How to get stains off of retainer?!

Question:

How to get stains off of retainer?

I've had this retainer for quite a few years and it has white marks on it that I can't get off with normal toothpaste and toothbrush. Please leave some helpful hints/solutions on how to get rid of these stains and keep them off. Unfortunately, replacement is not an option :(.

Answers:

I am an ortho assistant. If I were you I would discontinue brushing your retainer with toothpaste... that is probably what caused them in the first place. Try using only liquid soap and an old toothbrush to keep it clean. You can also use denture tablets. Soak your retainer in the tabs for 15 min. then take it out, rinse it and put it back in for another 15 minutes. Only soak your retainer upto once a week.. if you soak it more you will get a grey metallic film on it.

To get the stains off of it right now... take some table salt and pour some on the stains of your retainer and scrub it with a tooth brush. The salt is abrasive enough to remove any build-up but will not harm the acrylic on the retainer.

Oh... DO NOT SOAK YOUR RETAINER IN MOUTH WASH!!! The chemicals in mouth wash will eventually break down the acrylic.
