Tongue piercing damaging my teeth :(?!

Question: okay, i got my tongue pierced around 6 weeks ago - everything was going fine, it healed well with no problems ... then last week my gums started getting all red and sore and i chipped one of my bottom teeth at the front - i went to the dentist about my gums and he said it's down to the tongue bar. also, the tooth i chipped, i can feel my tongue bar like pushing the gum down. it's a plastic bar and has plastic balls and i was just wondering if there's anything i can do as i really don't want to take it out. :(

Hi! I have had several patients with gum and teeth issues because of the tongue bars. The bottom line is the plastic also holds bacteria and this creates other problems. I can only make 2 suggestions, you get a smaller metal bar and remove it during the night and use a fluoride/anti-bacterial rinse at bedtime. I have so many patients that run the bar across their bottom teeth and create small fractures that brake over time. If you are having so many issues at 6 weeks, they will only get worse until you address the problem. I know you don't want to give up the bar, but youwill have to make consessions to keep it. And I don't see any other alternative other than a different type of bar and better hygiene. Ask a professional piercer what you can do. They may know of another type of bar that will reduce the problem or has a different shape that won't hit the teeth as hard. But I can tell you now, what you have is not working and you have to remove it part time or change to another type. Do it now before you end up with more busted teeth that will only break more as you wear the bar. I'm sorry, but the other alternative is a custom made mouth guard you wear at night and re-train your tongue NOT to hit your teeth or gums. This would take time, but could work. Good luck. ~M

Nothing you can do - that is why you are chipping your teeth.

I got mine pierced about 5 years ago. I wore it for 2 months and after after breaking 2 crowns I took it out.

They are horrible.

just take it out

it's not worth damaging your teeth over it, believe me

fixing the problem is going to be a lot worse than losing the piercing.

Ah man that sucks for you.
Funny at my end though.

Take it out. You were badly advised on the size, type and positioning of your stud for your mouth shape.

Go to a better piercing studio and get another body part done, one that you can enjoy.

If you chew on the barbell, stop doing that. If you don't, I am not sure what is causing the chipping of teeth. I have had my tongue pierced for 12 years, and have a 0gauge barbell through it, and never chipped a tooth yet. The gum issue, that will happen, but it is up to you if the discomfort is worth loosing the piercing. I say that you will get used to it.

I had a boyfriend who had a tongue ring. The dentist say they cause a lot of problems for your mouth. Not only can you chip your teeth , but infections with certain type of foods that cause bateria to hang around your tongue ring. If you think about it, are tongue takes uo our entire mouths. It's hard to take care of your teeth/gums with something in the way.

any invasive product in the mouth causes problems, not only with teeth , saliva production increases trying to get rid, all are dam foolish any invasion of the body ,very basic and tribe reversion , think foreword not back

Take it out!!!

I had gotten my tongue pierced when I was 17 and I had it till I was 25 years old. By that time I had worn down my wisdom tooth. Luckily, the dentist said that I was lucky that I didn't wear down any of my other teeth. The wisdom tooth could be pulled but it was not serious. If it would have been any of my other teeth, it would have been bad.
Having that tongue ring is not worth damaging your teeth.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have never gotten it.

-Good luck.
