What does a gum infection from surgery look like?!

Question:

What does a gum infection from surgery look like?

I just had a tooth exposed 3 days ago and they placed a bracket on it. Since the surgery my swelling is getting worse and my mouth tastes terrible! The gum is all white/grey colored and puffed up so I am worried it may be infected. What are signs of infection?

Answers:

Generally an infection would present itself as very red and swollen and potentially some oozing. The bad taste in your mouth is not uncommon and you can help both inflammation and taste with some gentle salt water rinsing. If you are still in doubt call the oral surgeon back, they should have someone covering for them (likely another dental practice) and they should check you out. Hope that helps!
