In my mid thirties I was told by my dentist that fillings do not last forever. They are meant to last 8-10 years. He told me mine needed to be replaced.

He replaced them all (there were many) with white filling. It rocks! It looks like I have never had a cavity in my life :)

i think the dentist can probably do this for you. however, depending what tooth it's on, it may not have the strength of the silver filling.

Their are health considerations to having a mercury filling drilled out. Make sure you have a dentist that understands this.

Yes, the dentist can do that. I had to have two silver fillings replaced because they had worn down over time and they used the new technology. It matches my teeth perfectly. The stuff they use now is an epoxy type filling that the dentist says is actually stronger than your teeth. It's worth the effort.

pluses - replacing it would look better, reseal the tooth

minuses - mercury aerosal from cutting it out is somewhat hazardous, resin composite is not as strong or long lasting in general as silver amalgams, on average replacing a filling will enlarge it 10%, possibility of sensitivity.

If your dentist seems pretty good then replace it, if you have doubts I wouldn't. Also if the filling is that big you may need a crown instead of just replacing it.

Yes I've had it done and it's fine. One of my biggest cavities was filled with a composite filling and that actually worked better than the amalgam. Of course I got a filling behind it but that's another story. Anyways go for it, they can do it.

Yes you can have it changed. It may not be an insurance covered benefit so it may be pricey. Although anytime you have trauma to your tooth you run the risk of hurting the nerve of the tooth. If it is an upper tooth I wouldnt worry about it if it's in the back. If it is a lower tooth then people will see it when you smile. It's entirely up to you and as long as the Dr. doesnt feel it's too rishy then go for it! Good luck.
