Do you think I have a bad dentist?!

Question: I have been seeing a dentist and his hygenists cleaned all my teeth and gums. However, he refer me to a periodonitist. Why should he do that since my whole mouth is clean except for the gums of two of my lower teeth? Does this mean his team doesn't know what they are doing? I don't see why I should see another dentist.

Your dentist, as well as your hygienist, know what they are doing, and they are also perfectly capable of taking care of HEALTHY teeth and gums. A periodontist specializes in certain problems that can affect the gums and bone support around the teeth. So there must be an issue with the two lower teeth that you mentioned in your question. Either there has been significant bone loss in that area, which has caused the teeth to become loose, or there has been some gum recession in that area, which has caused some root surface to be exposed. The root of a tooth starts where the enamel on the tooth ends, and it is not meant to be above the gumline for several reasons, and it can progress to the point that would require the attention and possible treatment of a periodontist in order to help you keep those teeth. There are many treatment options, depending on your specific problem in that area, mainly gum surgery, which a general dentist does not perform. At that point, your dentist has made the right decision in referring you to a gum specialist in order to evaluate that area of your mouth and hopefully treat it so that you can avoid losing those teeth. I am a dental hygienist for a general dentist, and I see patients everyday who have problems similar to what you have described. Just because your dentist recommended a periodontist's evaluation absolutely does not mean that your dentist does not know what he is doing. He just feels that it is in your best interest to seek treatment from someone who specializes in treating the type of problem that you have. You should not feel insulted or like you have lost confidence in your regular dentist. Actually you should feel grateful that your regular dentist understands that your situation is out of his realm of expertise and has, therefore, decided to steer you in the direction of someone who can help you better for your specific situation.

periodontist is a serious disease of teh mouth and it all affects the gums, over time the reced so much that the teeth start to look vampirish and it just causes all kinds of damage to the mouth. I guess if u have something going on in the front lower part of ur mouth , it could be periodontist. I would immeadietly!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did he even tell u why u should go though? He should of. U must go to the periodontist bcuz dentists don't specialize in that type of mouth issue. Its just like a doctor except some doctors get trainig in a sub-field like doctors who help women deliver babaies is different from a regular doctor. Ur dentists seems to know wat he is doing.

obviously he needs to send you to a specialist, and that is his professional call because HE is the dentist and YOU are the patient. Your gums are diseased and he needs to make sure they get healthy before it is too late. Teeth are HIS specialty, GUMS are the other doctors.

The reason you don't understand this is because you are not a dentist. Listen to him.

A periodontist is a gum specialist, the dentist is a tooth specialist. His team knows exactly what they're doing because they sent you to someone who can help you when they can't!

No. You seem to have a great dentist who is sending you to another specialist to fix a problem before it gets too bad. Your dentist knows what he's doing, he just wants you to get the best care possible.
