What happens to your teeth if you don't wear you're denchers after you took off !

Question:

What happens to your teeth if you don't wear you're denchers after you took off your braces?

I had my braces removed a year ago and the doctor asked me to wear denchers all the time I did for a while but then I lost them and I haven't showed up for an appointment in a very long time. Is anything going to happen to my teeth?

Answers:

I think you mean "retainers" rather than "dentures" (dentures are what people who have NO teeth wear, whereas a retainer helps to keep the teeth straight after the braces are removed).
The worst thing that will happen if you don't wear them is that your teeth will gradually become crooked again. When you wear braces, they straighten the teeth themselves but several other factors that affect the alignment of the teeth (such as biting force, musculature of the mouth, etc) are not changed and if the retainer isn't worn to help keep the teeth in their new position, they will eventually drift back. If you hadn't been wearing the retainers for awhile, even if you found them now, they wouldn't fit anymore. It's up to you what you do at this point. You should visit your orthodontist again and see how much the teeth have shifted since you had the braces removed. If they have moved significantly, you will probably have to have braces on again, although not for the same amount of time as the first round. If they've moved only slightly, the orthodontist may be able to make new retainers that will fit this current shape and help maintain it. Either way, you've spent a long time and alot of money to have your teeth fixed, you really ought to follow through on it or you've wasted alot. Good luck!
