How to realign a jaw that is messed up?!

Question:

How to realign a jaw that is messed up?

My brother was just sitting down with his mouth shut for a while and when he opened his mouth, he said that his jaw felt misaligned. When he opens his mouth, he says he hears a clicking, tearing noise and it is hard for him to chew. Why is this and how can we fix it? Will it just wear off?

Answers:

My son had this problem so we took him to the docs who refereed us to a dental specialist. He was diagnosed with a disorder that allows the jaw to slip out of joint when he opens his mouth. It was not painful but his lower jaw front teeth did not align with his upper teeth. He was fitted with special braces on top and bottom teeth called an alignment appliance. Basically on the top brace there is a little like toggle, best way to describe it, and on the lower brace there is a slot so when he closes his mouth the toggle clicks into the slot and locks keeping his mouth closed and jaws in line.
He has to wear it 24 hours a day and its not removable. For meal times there is a tiny lever on the lower brace inside his lip that when moved up releases the toggle from the slot so he can open his mouth.
The braces are quite severe, his mouth being quite full of acrylic, clasps, springs, screws and lots of shaped wires.
At first he found talking impossible but soon learned to talk with his mouth clamped shut.
He is in these braces for 2 years minimum, could be longer.
I advice you to get this checked out.
