After a tooth extraction, how long should it take to clot (using gauze)?!


Question: i had a tooth extracted today, a molar i think, just curious how long it should take to clot. and is it best to sit upright? i'm taking pain killers and penicillin.

you need to keep the guaze for about 20 to 30 mins atleast after extration.,the idea of keeping the guaze in the extracted socket area is for the formation of blood clot in that area which would prevent any secondary bleeding.There is no such thing that you must sit upright.,you may be in any possition.,please continue having the antibiotics/penicilltin as prescribed by your dentist..

You should also avoid swishing with any type of liquid and sucking through a straw these things can dislodge a blood clot also avoid smoking as it can have the same effect as the straw.Try alternating the painkillers with Advil or Motrin to help with inflammation.Good Luck!
