Why is tartar on your teeth the same name as tartar sauce?!

Question: is that not gross?

Answers: is that not gross?

It's a coincidence.

The English "tartar sauce" is a translation of the French phrase "sauce tartare", which is named for the Tartare, the French word for the Tartars, a Turkic/Mongolian people "of central Asia who invaded western Asia and eastern Europe in the Middle Ages" and introduced the sauce to Europe.

The tartar on your teeth is called that because it resembles potassium bitartrate.
