What's a dental cleaning like? How long does it last?!

Question: Does it hurt? Is it uncomfortable or awkward? How long does it last?

It depends on the condition of your gums. It shouldn't last more then 45 minutes. If you don't have much build-up, then it'll be easy and painless. The more build-up you have, the more intense the cleaning will be. In that case, the dentist/hygienist will administer a local anesthetic to make it more comfortable. After this, your gums might be a bit tender, but some salt water rinses will have you feeling much better sooner. The key to a comfortable cleaning is frequency. The more often you get one (every 6 months) the more comfortable the experience. Also making sure you maintain proper oral care at home (brushing/flossing).

Dental cleaning is very important. Good oral hygiene is important, not only for looks, but for general health as well. Poor oral hygiene can lead to a variety of dental and medical problems such as gum disease, infection, bone loss, heart disease, strokes and more. Regular check ups and cleanings can prevent these problems as well as provide you with good oral hygiene. You could hardly feel it. It take as about half an hour or less. I've had it before it was comfortable for me because I've known my dentist for the longest. So its up to how you feel.

When you go for a dental cleaning you will have a few x-rays taken to check for cavities. Then you will have a exam where they check the inside of your mounth for periodontitis. The hygeinist clean your teeth. It does not hurt. After getting the plaque off the teeth you will get polished. The paste is flavored. it last about 1 hr.

There are several different types of dental cleanings, which will be determined by your dentist and hygienst after they have obtained recent xrays and done an evaluation of your teeth and gums. Basically, the type of cleaning you will need depends on how much tartar buildup there is above and below your gumline, and also on how long the buildup has been there and how it has affected your gums. Tartar is hardened plaque. Plaque is the soft stuff that grows on your teeth and makes them feel furry if you haven't brushed in a while. Your toothbrush and floss can remove plaque from your teeth, but if the plaque is left to sit on your tooth for a certain length of time, it begins to calcify (get hard) and can not longer be brushed or flossed off. At that point, only a dental hygienist, which is what I am, can remove this tartar. Over time, tartar can start to accumulate below the gum, which can cause a cleaning to be quite uncomfortable. In these situations, I usually will give patients a little anesthesia so they don't feel it and also so that I can be as thorough as possible knowing the patient is not in pain. So to answer your questions, a cleaning can actually be enjoyable, it can last from 45 minutes to 3 hours depending on how much tartar there is to be removed, and it can sometimes be uncomfortable so make sure you see a dentist who specializes in "painless dentistry".
